The Dream Maker

Permalink 02/22/11 09:13, by Andy Penn, Categories: Background, Fun

I work for the BBC (Big Business Corporation) and I'm sent all over the world to inject dreams into an economy in order to get it back on track.

My mission here, like all my others is for exactly that purpose; dream on, kid.

This is currently a dreamless territory, like so many in this region, as a result of dictatorship.

Dictatorship is the worst thing for any economy. It turns back time and puts the fear of God into its inhabitants. This renders the whole population dreamless and superstitious.

I must mention however that the jury is still out on this statement and the non believers point to China to illustrate the exact opposite.

My response to that, of course, is that it's only since China adopted or wanted to emulate our western values did it become a healthy economy.

Anyway, enough of this philosophical chitchat, it gets us nowhere.

I'm a dream maker not a philosopher; I don't have the time to sit around chatting and day dreaming.

My job is to offer a little modernity to the youth of this country and 'sway them westwards', as we say in the business.

Some jobs are easier than others depending on how entrenched the doctrine is.

This one looks fairly easy as we've been surveying this territory for a while and have been flooding it with all the latest state of the art gadgets through the black market; gadgets like mobile phones, Computers, Internet access, designer label accessories and DVD's.

Movies are always a good allure; not all types of movies, but your typical 'chick flicks' and your 'boys' own', throw in some political plots where the west has been found to be a major culprit in some invasion purely for its selfish purposes.

This makes them think that the West is strong enough to admit its wrongdoings to the world and that it allows its people to put it on trial and be judged. Yes that's true democracy.

You can always depend on gadgets to win a side over. It's much more effective than military arsenal. They give you a sense of wellbeing and of being an educated moderate.

So what is it that we offer in the west? Plastic dreams; that's what we offer; plastic dreams in the guise of democracy.

Democracy allows you to believe in justice and hope and to be whoever you want to be; up to a point, of course; you can't overdo it; you must be conscious of the happiness of others. That's why we have rules and regulations.

My job is to instil a sense of awareness in the client's mind. They must feel that they've been made aware of contentious events and that they form an important cog within the wheel of this dream we call democracy.

Give somebody an inkling of a dream and they strive to make it come true and to make it come true they need to spend money and to spend money, you need to earn it first. That's it in a nutshell; that's the ingredients of a healthy economy. Living the dream is what we want everyone to aim for.

Show me a healthy dreamer and I'll show you a healthy economy; that's our company's motto. And a healthy company is one with a triple A rating; agile, assess and adapt. Its employees must be agile with the ability to assess any situation and adapt to it for the benefit of the company; there is no room for individualism.

There is no "I" in team.

Our client can follow his or her dream (I say his or her and not his, because we believe in equality) provided you stay within the community and don't stray beyond the pale.

We don't tolerate fundamentalists here.

We, in the West believe in giving the people a certain amount of freedom to dream around in and my job is to make sure it happens in countries like this where dictatorship has stifled all dreams.

Last week I met with some young educated radicals to discuss taking their frustration to the street. I showed them a couple of short films on riots and demonstrations that occurred in the 60's. I had mixed in some relevant musical soundtrack with the alarmed voice of the reporter's live account of the event. I also showed them 'Live Aid'.

That seemed to have put the icing on the cake; they wanted to be a part of that movement. You could see it in their eyes; they wanted to feel what it's like to be involved in something so catalystic.

This week the whole city has been a washed with people marching for their rights.

Televised passion mixed with blood and guns is a good foundation for strong and healthy future.

My job's done here.
